Goal7's client, an international E&P company, required assistance in preparing an out-of-round application for a Carbon Storage License in the Southern North Sea. The storage site was proposed to be part of a plan to develop a CO2 transport and storage solution supporting industrial emitters within the UK, along with the development of a blue H2 production plant. This project aligned well with the client's ambitions to achieve Net Zero.

Motivation:

Goal7's client, an international E&P company, required assistance in preparing an out-of-round application for a Carbon Storage License in the Southern North Sea. The storage site was proposed to be part of a plan to develop a CO2 transport and storage solution supporting industrial emitters within the UK, along with the development of a blue H2 production plant. This project aligned well with the client's ambitions to achieve Net Zero.

Our Approach:

Goal7 used their CCS value chain knowledge and project co-ordination skills to support the project through:

  • Starting with a blank sheet of paper, they worked with the client to develop the initial project concept centered around the proposed carbon storage site. This was assessed while addressing potential for emissions reduction, buildout, repurposing, and economic return
  • This initial concept was then further developed to ensure a credible carbon transport and storage value chain solution. This involved detailed working sessions across the entire value chain to ensure interface alignment, involvement in specific working groups such as: leading the emitter strategy, consolidating and preparing project cost estimates, and project co-ordination support through project scheduling and risk assessments
  • Goal7 were responsible for co-ordinating and aligning the resources and skills of multiple parties from the client's commercial and subsurface teams, to external consultant support, to their own expertise and capabilities. In addition, they took the lead in co-ordinating the development of the storage application which included: the distribution of the application work amongst teams, drafting of core areas such as area plan, and conducting the final review to ensure consistency throughout. To support the final submission they also prepared presentation packs for the client to present to their executive board to gain approval

Benefit and Impact:

  • Within a compressed time-frame, Goal7 provided technical, commercial, environmental and project co-ordination support to this project and, alongside other project partners, delivered a detailed and robust application
  • Following this project, Goal7 secured future work with the client, and used experience gained here to undertake cluster sequencing CSL applications. The core learnings from this project have been invaluable in further developing a carbon storage solution with the client that will have a significant positive impact
