Goal7's client, an established E&P company, engaged the Goal7 team to assist in the review and screening of carbon dioxide shipping solutions for a carbon storage site in the Dutch sector of the North Sea

Motivation:

Goal7's client, an established E&P company, engaged the Goal7 team to assist in the review and screening of carbon dioxide shipping solutions to understand the full CCS value chain and the market as a whole

Our Approach:

Goal7 assessed the full CO2 shipping market and the key players involved. Criteria was developed to assess the areas key to understanding the market, which included:

  • Identifying companies that operate within each part of the value chain in similar industries - from capturing and conditioning through to storage to develop a catalogue of:
    • Companies with current involvement with CO2
    • Companies that have involvement with fluids similar to CO2 therefore have similar expertise
    • Companies developing CO2 shipping concepts and where in the value chain they are located
  • Review of CO2 shipping conditions
    • Review of CO2 transport conditions (typically termed low, medium and high pressure), including a technical understanding, market position, advantages and disadvantages, and associated risks
  • Deep dive into companies with proposed CO2 transport solutions
  • Levelised cost of transportation modelled at various conditions, distances, quantities as well as other sensitivities to allow a comparison to be undertaken
  • A review of the regulations and standards involved for CO2 transportation across North-West Europe

Benefit and Impact:

Goal7 delivered an in-depth assessment of the CO2 shipping market with the benefit of providing the client with a comprehensive understanding of the full shipping value chain and provided valuable insights into the key players involved in the process. It also provided the client with a deeper understanding of the different conditions involved with shipping CO2 and the associated levelised costs. The output of this assessment provided the client with a better understanding of CO2 shipping, allowing them to progress with developing into the CCS market.
