The accelerated decarbonisation study was a comprehensive review of decarbonisation options to meet the North Sea Transition Deal target of reducing the carbon intensity of an offshore oil and gas platform's operations in 2025 by at least 10%. Additionally, the study serves as an initial feasibility study that could provide a pathway to further decarbonise the platform or to support transitioning the asset to a new energy purpose.
Motivation:
The accelerated decarbonisation study was a comprehensive review of decarbonisation options to meet the North Sea Transition Deal target of reducing the carbon intensity of an offshore oil and gas platform's operations in 2025 by at least 10%. Additionally, the study serves as an initial feasibility study that could provide a pathway to further decarbonise the platform or to support transitioning the asset to a new energy purpose.
Our Approach:
The project was approached by first identifying a wide net of decarbonisation options and developing these sufficiently for screening. These options were then screened down to two or three which could be further evaluated.
First, Goal7 framed the project by:
- Documenting the agreed project objectives
- Agreeing on what was in and out of frame
- And by creating a list of decarbonisation options
The second stage of the project consisted of:
- A high-level assessment of the decarbonisation options by collecting, combining and preparing sufficient data
- And development of a screening matrix, which was presented during a workshop to review and endorse the decarbonisation options ranking
The third and final stage focused on:
- Technically maturing the screened options
- Undertaking economic assessments
- And recommending decarbonisation concepts to be taken forward to Appraise and Select phase
Benefit and Impact:
- Laying the foundation for future decarbonisation studies that go beyond desktop screening
- Helping to realise the brownfield decarbonisation by achieving the milestones for the Appraise Phase and setting out the path towards Concept Select
- Identification of a less used development concept in the North Sea from onshore gas compression to increase recoverable reserves and decrease carbon intensity
- And for the client, the project allowed them to review a wide net of available decarbonisation options without having to commit significant time and engineering resource which were unavailable at the time
